The Idea
The United States of America and, likely, democracy itself will perish without a peaceful, moral, and spiritual revolution.
While we have delivered some liberation for some folks some of the time, we have delivered suffering for everyone else at home and abroad. The reasons for this go back to our founding. We only attempted to fulfill two of the three pillars of our democracy: 1. our ideals (founding documents) and 2. our political-economy (public and private institutions). We completely neglected to craft a culture that can fulfill our ideals and be enacted through our institutions. To become a full functioning democracy and realize unity, we need the third pillar - a civic faith and culture, one that produces the experience of care, purpose, safety, and belonging. Without this, our faithless political-economy will continue to destroy all we hold dear. To activate our culture, we must summon a larger story, a more ancient truth, unifying symbol, and clear path forward. Unfortunately, our national bird, the bald eagle, is a bad match for our ideals ("All Created Equal", "Life, Liberty, and the Pursuit of Happiness", and "e pluribus unum"). The eagle is a raptor, a solitary hunter, who swoops down from its protected nest to steal, exploit, and scavenge. It then retreats to it's "house on the hill" to feast with its kin and avoid any responsibility for its actions below. Like the distribution of wealth and power in our nation, it is also white on top and brown on bottom. A new symbol and guide is needed for this perilous moment in our nation's history. |
Enter the bison |
The bison is our National Mammal, whose presence, behavior and implied ethics are a much more accurate expression of our mammalian nature and purpose of our nation. The bison elicit something deep in our souls. They connect us to rolling prairies, lush forests, rushing rivers, majestic peaks, the rising sun, a prismatic dusk, and a starry sky.
They call us into individual and collective power. They calls us into relationship with wild nature, play, community, and adventure. They beckon us to be grateful for natural beauty, and summon us to care for all that is sacred. Their powerful medicine heals, guides, and enlivens us: COURAGE - Unlike cattle, bison run straight into an approaching storm to move through it quickly—an apt metaphor for the hard truths we must face as a nation and the necessary reforms we must implement to address polarization, racial injustice, rape culture, climate change, and income inequality. CARE - Bison care for the most vulnerable by placing them in the center of the herd—an equally apt metaphor for the way we must holistically care for our sick, depressed, traumatized, young, elderly, disabled, and historically marginalized. INCLUSION - Bison make room for other species to graze, drink, and play, peacefully sharing space with elk, moose, deer, and birds—another metaphor for the diverse relationships we are summoned to develop in our economy, communities, ecologies, and foreign policy. PLAY - Bison spend a good deal of time at play with each other, laying about, nudging each other, or running off together. INDEPENDENCE - Bison make room for themselves. Although they move about as herds, they can often be found wandering alone, as if solitude, leisure, and discovery were all that mattered. GENERATIVITY - As a keystone species, bison ensure all can flourish. Through their play, wallowing, and grazing, bison till the soil, protect fresh water springs, and play a vital role in the ecological resilience of their habitats, cultivating the diversity of plant, insect, and bird populations. Bison are a symbol of genuine prosperity for many First Nations, a symbol of “give-away,” of purpose, of contributing their “100 gifts” towards the betterment of all. PROTECTION - Bison are ornery if provoked. They are fiercely protective of themselves and their community, leveraging their incredible strength, acceleration, and speed (up to 40 mph) to ward off threats. Another apt metaphor for the spirit we must bring to tending to the social, emotional, and environmental health of our people and communities, as well as the power and responsibility organizations have to protect and heal our nation. REDEMPTION - To clear the west for farming and railroads, the bison were nearly exterminated. Because of their majesty—their aesthetic and moral value— and the critical role they play in many ecosystems, we have chosen to bring them back, to make room for them to thrive, and allow them to guide us into a deeper expression of who we are. By restoring right relations with the bison and First Nations, we achieve redemption. So, what does this mean for us? We can allow the bison to work on us individually—to move through us and into greater courage, care, inclusion, play, independence, protection, generativity, and redemption. This guidance is neither liberal nor conservative, but rather evokes the fullest expression of each attitude. Within these ethics, we find greater compassion and power, greater equity and individual achievement, greater connection and courage. With these ethics, we achieve unity. |
The Bison Medicine symbol contains three red stripes and three white stars that represent the three levels of a democracy (idea, political economy, and civic faith and culture) that are required for democracy to be realized. The perimeter circle evokes the wholeness, flourishing, connection, and homecoming that we will all experience when we allow the medicine to heal, guide, and enliven us.

The Book
About the Book
Bison Medicine begins with an invitation and provocation to become a spiritually active citizen of the United States. It is a call to take the nation as seriously as we take our life, family, careers, and god. To answer this call, we’ll root ourselves in our shared family history (Part 1) and the suffering we experience because we are separated from our personal and collective purpose (Parts 2 and 3). We'll then explore the healing, guiding, and enlivening medicine of the bison (Part 4), a high-definition view of our nation’s purpose (Parts 5-8), and a path forward to activate bison medicine and flourish (Parts 9 and 10). The Journey of the Book In 2016, the United States Congress, in partnership with the Inter-Tribal Buffalo Council, Wildlife Conservation Society, and National Bison Association, passed the National Bison Legacy Act, officially recognizing the bison as our National Mammal. In 2022, Brandon published Purpose Work Nation, where he contrasted the implied ethics of the eagle and bison. The response from readers and listeners was overwhelming. Brandon began writing Bison Medicine later that year. In advance of it being published as a print, audio, and e-book a section of the book will be released every other week for public comment. Brandon will also release videos exploring the soul of the nation. As the book endeavors to guide our entire nation into a more flourishing future, we will need your help. We need your critical feedback, wild ideas, and dissenting opinions. Please share them in the comments, and share this site with your friends, family and social networks, so we can sound the chorus of democracy and finish the business our Founders started. Please sign up to join the community and to receive the weekly email (at the top of the page). The Proceeds of the Book In the bison spirit of generativity, of "give away", this book will always be free to access on this site. In 2025 pdf, audio, and video formats will be available. If you enjoyed reading / listening to the book, and would like to show your appreciation, please make a contribution to the Native American Rights Fund, an organization devoted to healing, peace, spiritual wisdom, civil rights, and flourishing for all life. The print version of the book will also be for sale in early 2025, with 100% of the proceeds donated to the Native American Rights Fund. B
